Alternatively, go off the beaten track along the Pacific Highway to Whakatane, a coastal paradise full of history and scenic delights, to see the path less travelled. In this small community you will see "The Heads", where the Whakatane River runs into the Pacific Ocean. Hear the story of Wairaka, who saved the women on the Mataatua Waka (canoe) and now watches over the town as a statue on a rock in the river.
